The Old Course is amongst the more famous of Thailand golf courses. The Siam Country Club was Thailand’s second golf course when it opened in 1970. Back in the 70`s, the course had heavily contoured greens, overhanging trees, and gentle bunkers.
The Old Course was closed in 2006-2007 for a complete renovation of the original layout and facilities. The original layout was, for the most part, kept at it was, with all other aspects of the course being modernized and brought up to meet the international championship level requirement. Upgrades to the original parallel holes included curved fairways, new water hazards, high lipped bunkers, and relocated greens. New greenside bunkers where added around the legendary undulating putting surfaces.
Since being re-opened back in 2007, the golf course has hosted several international golf tournaments. Including being named as the home of the US LPGA, Honda Classic from 2010 onwards. In 2018, the Old Course was voted 73rd best golf course in the world by USA Golf Digest magazine.
The 7,162-yard, par-72 Old Course, is set in the low hills, but contains more than its fair share of mature trees, shrubs and plants. With ample flowering and fruit trees on the course, will give you the impression of being in an orchard, especially when in season. The sculptured bushes and hedges, in the shape of Wildlife, are a main feature unique to Siam Country Club.
The course has an outward nine and retuning nine. Many of the golf holes play past the series of lakes, that are strategically placed around the course. Long, straight drives are required to negotiate the larger fairway bunker complexes. Going Left or Right is punished by large trees which flank every fairway. The large greens on the Course roll fast, but are excellently maintained, and extremely undulated. The many breaks in the Greens, favour the assistance of an experienced caddie. As expected, the entire course is maintained to a championship level all year round.
A large golden Buddha is watching over the course which can be seen mainly from the all uphill 9th hole. The Course has many dramatic challenges, particularly the last four holes which are The Old Courses answer to Amen Corner. The 15th through to the 18th hole, are arguably be the best finishing holes of any Pattaya golf courses. If you are having a good day and scoring well, take care as these four holes could easily bring you back to earth with a bump. The final hole, a par 5, is tempting to try to reach in 2. However, many a golfer has walked off the Green, with a bogey or worse as the closer you get to the green the more difficult the hole becomes.
The outside of the clubhouse is still the original structure, built in 1970’s, but has had a major facelift on the inside. The Clubhouse stands high above the course and overlooks the valley beyond.
The Siam Country Club, Old Course itself is one of the best courses in the Country and should be on every golfer's list of courses to play when in The Land Of Smiles.
